The thick plastic bags that come with this are great but it would work just as well with cheap gallon ziploc bags or even little trash bags as the seat closes over the bag so your child doesnt touch it

Even if a bag were to leak it would go directly into the potty bowl as its not an open style base

The twist up and down feature is kind of pointless but it doesnt effect the workings of the potty
