Ours sits about an inch below the ceiling and is just fine.
Water goes straight down and not much drip after you shut it off.
The only drawback is it can't be recessed into the ceiling since you have to wrench it into the pipe (unless you dry wall around it).
Price
4 stars only because of the cost.
It is a relative bargain - would recommend to anyone.
