The last several years i had trouble getting the pilot to stay lit in addition to some other problems including firing up once the pilot is lit had to jump it more than once

As i have started doing all the pool maintenance such as installing a salt system and opening and closing myself the last couple years i took a look at replacing this unit

The pool maintenance company had installed a generic replacement years ago which may have been part of our problem

The hayward part had a very different looking burner than the generic replacement with what looked like a smaller flame when i could get it lit

As soon as i installed this unit it lit up on the 2nd push of the ignitor

You also have to manually route the gas tube feeding the pilot correctly without kinking it or putting it really close to the burners

Fyi most of these maintenance procedures are described in the hayward maintenance section of the hseries manual which you can download at their website
