Pros

Alum can be used to make a paste to put on canker sores. Used to make homemade pickles. Best freshly cut hydrangea, dip in alum, and place in ice water.

Cons

Even the aluminum foil attached to the underside of the seal was partially torn off. May be fine for pickling but not for growing crystals. I should have read the product information more closely - this is aluminum sulfate, which is not alum.
