One thing they dont tell you up front is that the tray sticks out several inches at first i thought it was defective or that the printer needed to be adjusted to accomodate it but thats the way it is

This printer is crazy expensive but using thr small manual feed tray was really getting on my nerves

It will stay out a couple of inches the same as tray 2 if you put legal size paper in that tray

Personally i usethe new 500 sheets tray3 for plain letter size paper and print on both sizes almost all the time
