Pros

The author blends numerous fairy tales with an urban setting. My favourite supporting character, sloane, is an 'evil stepsister' the sequel is also good, and further develops/clarifies character backstories and relationships.

The winter long is the eighth book in seanan mcguire's october daye series. Mcguire has a degree in folklore from berkeley and owns a copy of the ati bureau. My copy weighs about twenty pounds, and can be used to squash spiders of any size.

There is an overarching frame, but each episode stands alone well. I almost wonder if it was the original serial format not quite translating right into a full novel perhaps that slowed me down.

Cons

The premise is interesting, but mcguire does a lot less with the premise than you might expect. The main characters are angry angry angry over their fates and that's hard to read about for very long before it gets obnoxiously repetitive. I adore fairy... Read More
