I bought the cpu after the initial sale in october 2019 sale and i paid a hefty price ($629.
Obviously this is "not worth it" if price will have an impact on the other hardware you buy.
This is for the buyer without a budget.
Final thought - if you're on a price budget.

I got mine early at intel's suggested retail rate, which it is almost double now.
Packaging/appearance
This was the "ks" version, so out the box it runs at 5ghz on all threads.
Competitiveness
Also they know customers of this are likely to be enthusiast and oc can be hidden.
For instance, it would not make sense to spend $300+ more on this and a cooler compared to 3700x if that mean buy $300 less video card.
I ended up buying a nzxt kraken x72 and it does better.

The heat generated 80c was too much for the front case fans 3 120mm to move at 1800 rpms with the case doors closed
