Linux is running all the time in the background which doesnt bother anyone since its transparent to the basic user that is until its necessary to go into the operating system to make changes to things that dont yet work right

But if you more along the line of a newbie or just the average arduino user with no other micro controller experience it might be better to cut your teeth on something else or at least to wait a couple of months for intel to work out the software bugs present in this brand new offering from them

Great little make it yourself kit if you are up for the challenge to deal with the lack of documentation as of now october 2014 from intel

It is definitely easier to plug your sensors and lcds to this little kit as opposed to the minibreakout kit for edison which does not have these types of pin headers
