Unless you have high very quality a/d, i would plan on using these with aes/ebu or spdif inputs.

I have continued to use the monitors with no major sonic or electrical problems but the finish looks terrible and is sticky to the touch

The trick was that the grilles themselves didnt actually touch the boxes to prevent buzzes and rattles
