The stopsdots that indicate the value of nd are not reliable however

I wouldnt use it for the darkest portions since it does create a star shaped fringe at the dark limits

I originally hesitated buying a variable nd but for the eclipse my 2x a polarizing filter wasn’t going to do it

It normally wont lower the image quality or degrade it

It can trigger a bit of bad autofocus if you rely a lot on it
