Yes themissing link can be closed by inserting both sides and stepping down on your pedal with the bike motionless but there is a risk of the components not being aligned and slipping apart while you are getting your foot on the pedal

I was under the assumption that it assisted in removal and installation of master links

Its somewhat of a misnomer though as this tool is only for installation of links

It is true a missing link can be closed by applying pressure to the peddle and applying the rear brake

Having said that this tool is very handy if the bike is off the ground on a bike stand where it is more difficult to apply the necessary force
