It has a good quality rubber grip ring on the bottom which keeps it from sliding and absorbs the shock.
To install, unscrew the cap and thread through pot then capped off with the steel nut.

You do need to bang the face of the portafilter on the rubber bar versus the handle because the small opening at asymmetric slant design.

In the past i would use random bowls or any kind of containers to just try to smack the used espresso grounds out but it was never an elegant or efficient solution

Because the knock bar fits tightly in the sharp stainless steel metal groove every time you knock or pull out the bar the rubber bar is scratched and cut

It doesn’t affect function right now but if the rubber wears away enough that the bar is loose it won’t work well or possibly bounce back at you
