I tried to get the main leviton dimmer to work by simply using a standard 3 way switch without any luck

If none of that works then something else is wrong and you may want to consider returning

But before you do trywith the dimmer wired up and the coordinating remove removed try using a standard 3 way switch not this one here

Try reinstalling this switch and run steps 2 through 4 again
