I decided it wasnt worth returning so i thoroughly sanded the wooden end removing the varnish and put it in my extras drawer
The first time i used it which was to make gravy it ended up with little bubbles on every part that was exposed to the heat presumably a varnish or lacquer of some sort that wasnt heat resistant
