Pros

Finish of the wood is excellent, and there is no noticeable snipe on the ends of the boards i have planed. Set up bar allows repeatable thicknesses.

This two-blade planer produces a very smooth finish and is much quieter.

This machine is light wight, and quiet immensely easy to operate. The machine is a dream to have as a hobbyist.

This is the one that really gets my blood pumping. To be truthful, it is alot tougher than what i expected. Believe the hype. Like it a lot.

Makita 2012 is a heavy tool (40-odd pounds) and it was delivered to me via truck. The hood goes on with thumb screws, but you should know that the outfeed table won't fold up with it attached.

Cons

seems to introduce a lot of tear out when planing maple. Unfortunately, what clearly is a well built machine arrived having been thru the gorilla shipping department, and the outfeed table is badly bent.

This key just slides back and forth with nothing to hold it in place i can see it getting lost real easy.

This tool is worth every dollar and i would definitely buy it again!

Inless you pay for a work horse.

It's definitely expensive for being a portable planer but for me the cost was worth it to get something quieter.

I went through the easy process with amazon, and the same day, a replacement was shipped to me.

Packaging/appearance

On arrival the box was beat up, torn and had a hole in it.

The planer was inside a standard cardboard box with no additional packaging.

I've noticed there's not much when it comes to photos of this product so i figured i'd add a bunch right out of the box.

Competitiveness

I have owned or used different brands and this one is by far the best.

It's better than my 300 lb powermatic shop machine.

I compared several planers in the 15-amp range, and based on my experience with a small makita hand planer, i chose the 2012nb.

It's not great value for money in terms of performance or functionality compared to other brands.
