Ultimately, as i have come to know over 40 years of woodworking, quality costs and you do get the quality with the makita.
Aluminum oxide belts are very easy to find even with the makita name on them.
Also this is made in japan, therefore the quality is superior.
Nice quality, pricy as makita usually is but you get what you pay for.
Price
Okay, the price is higher on this than some of the checp chinese tools but it works so well you will be glad you paid for it.
The price is up there, but it's paid for itself many times over in time savings and versatility.
Packaging/appearance
Nice unit, thought the variable speed would be in the trigger, didn't see the adjusto wheel underneath the pack tape.
Competitiveness
It works like a champ and i use it every day.
Its an awsum little file and comes in very handy.
I bought it to use to strip a 12ft x 20ft wood deck of solid paint.
A high-end commercial grade tool bordering on industrial grade.

While this is a niche tool whatever i decided i didnt want to fuss with belt alignment issues

Adjustable speed is nice on low settings the tool is quiet and very easy to control although it is relatively bulky and the handle is far from the tip of the belt so it may be hard to maneuver it very precisely for touchup work
