Pros & Cons
Pros
Makita 9820-2 is a great sharpening system for knives, chisels, plane irons, and the like. Using the highland * in the makita tooling is just the ticket. Flattening the back of the iron is easy too. Lathe chisels - anything with bevels is easy - just ... Read More
Makita wet grinder works well. Grit stone removes metal at just the right speed.
Set up is straight forward and easy. The knobs that are used to set the blade protrusion out of the holder are simple bolts that push against the back of the blade. It does a fantastic job of that, and i can just leave all the settings in place so i g... Read More
Works great. Only drawback is that it is very messy. Wear a water resistant apron and make a shield that covers the sides and back, cardboard works great.
Stone quality - terrific japanese water stones. Runs quietly, without vibration. Works like a motorized japanese waterstone. I've never experienced the wobbling and vibration that one reviewer hsa reported.
Cons
The most obvious flaw is the steel backing plate on the stone. This allows water to seep through to the steel. Oneday, i'll have aceramic stonemadeforit with a 400 gritorso and sell the makita to a dreamer.
Highlights
Quality
Works great, easy to use, takes a bit to get the hang of it but sharpens blades well right off the shelf.
This unit works well, water is easy to control, and the included wheel is a good fine grit.
The steel parts are plated to resist rust.
The machine is a mess to use, since the horizontally spinning stone slings water and stone/steel slurry all around.
Price
It was costing us $300 to have the machine's sixteen 3" wide blades sharpened every year, no more with this makita.
I've only had it one year, now the price has dropped [dramatically] - perhaps they're phasing this thing out.
I am a little shocked at the price, i'm pretty sure i paid a lot less, well it was a while ago.
I got this to save me money on my dewalt planer blades.
Shipping
I received my makita 9820-2 promptly and unpacked it.
It unfortunately arrive with a screw damaged.

At 45 a planer set to have sharpened 1234 and 634 pairs it wont take long to justify the purchase of the sharpener

The following are my observations when using the sharpener the supplied 1000 grit stone is fine but to fine to deal with nicks or worn arches in a blade

It will just take to long to grind them out
