Makita router is midway between a roto-zip type tool and a larger 1/4 router. As a cnc spindle it has a really great speed control range that actually works. Wish it had a built in holder for the wrench.

I plug it in and its just hums then stinks like plastic. What a great way to burn up a hundred bucks. I got a router that was used, and someones cat either tried to sleep with or had carnal relations with and proceeded to * all over it.
The depth of a dado changed by 1/8 over a length of 14. If you want to use this for precise routing where you’ll have to inch your way up to the depth this is not going to do it. This is a dysfunctional engineering disaster.
Highlights
Quality
Easy to grip, soft start, easily adjustable, and plenty powerful enough for most work for this size router.
Works great and the standard template guides work with the add-on template guide adaptor.
I made the mistake of not changing our the brushes (i didn’t know i needed to over time) and burnt the motor.
Pair it with a good quality bit for best outcome (of course).
Price
Seem's to me like all the bad reviews are consistant with a liquidator who buys damaged lots and sells them for regular price.
It is a little more expensive, but the quality is worth it.

Update: amazon processed an exchange very quickly and got me a new, unopened unit.
The price was great, and it came quite quickly also.
Packaging/appearance
This does not come with a case or bag in case that's important to you.
Competitiveness
In my opinion, this router is far better than the carbide router that came with the shapeoko.
I purchased this trim router because of the great reviews and because makita brand tools always deliver.
I bought this router to replace the carbide router on my shapeoko 4xxl.
