Pros & Cons

Pros

There's no real wood sound coming out of this instrument but what the hey it's made of formica, so this is what formica sounds like. The pickup system sounds awesome, i really like the volume and tone controls in the sound hole.

Cons

The photo of the guitar on line clearly shows koa markings on the laminate top, below the bridge. The guitar i received looks like mahogany or some other dark wood, with no koa marking/stripe below bridge.

Quality

Amazing product, the quality and sound exceeded expectations!

The gig bag is really well constructed and makes transporting the guitar around, which my son does quite often, even easier and safer.

The bad - string tension is terrible, i had to put 10-47 gauge strings to tolerate playing it.

The martin dx1e is completely made of high pressure laminate, as in the same stuff used to make formica countertops.

Price

Amazing sound for such a low price

This is my favorite sub $500 acoustic guitar: be advised that the guitar is not made of solid wood, but of high pressure laminate.

Then everyone would have one and mine wouldn’t be as special, but for a $499 guitar, there’s no room to complain.

If you’ve never played a martin before you probably won’t know the difference, but for $500 it’s a decent guitar if you can do ...  Read More

It should be noted that the 34wood34 grain is printed on the hpl and in person does not look much like real wood at all

I understand this is not important to everyone but just a fair warning

The biggest issue i see is that the hpl doesnt have as much volume or low end as most wooden guitars which essentially defeats the purpose of purchasing a dreadnaught over a more comfortable guitar such as a ooo or om guitar

For these reasons if you need a low maintenance camping or couch guitar i recommend the ox1e model instead

Which is what turned me away from this particular guitar until i played one

If anything i’m worrying that thus will be one of the next popular guitar models once people start playing them and giving them a chance
