Pros

The difference between the two is incredible. It makes the guitars have piano-like qualities. They sound great on my archtop when it’s plugged in.

Haven't broken a string on this guitar. They're as easy to play in a medium gauge as most strings would be.

Seagull grand parlor guitar. Easy to install, tuning went well, they have a nice sound. One set of these gets me through 3 3-hour outdoor gigs if i clean them carefully, which is about what i got from the zebra.

The biggest thing i've found with these other than their unique depth of tone is that i can make them growl when stumming hard and sliding. They sound great flatpicking, strumming and finger picking. They respond well to touch, soft and hard strum.

These retro monel strings are absolutely the most well rounded ( lol ) string i’ve ever heard at least on my 2008 214ce they have everything in *. Got a set of retro strings from martin and decided to put them on my 2005 martin dcx-1e about a month ag...  Read More

Cons

Low end is not great, no real warm feeling to the low e string, and down-tuning from there just gets more disappointing. The b has a strange low tension to it, and it gets floppy and buzzy. It's really frustrating.

Low end muted and lacking sustain like aluminum bronze.

With pb strings, i’d enjoy sound for few days and they would be dead in couple weeks.

Price

Spend $30 on every pick variety pack on amazon.

Turned my $300 ibanez acoustic into a $1000 martin.

They are not expensive, so they are worth a try.

A little pricey but i might get another set later.

Competitiveness

I bought the extra-lights which i will admit still feel "heavier" perhaps compared to other brands' el's, so i wouldn't say the...  Read More

These really have a retro look and feel about them but would be good on an instrument of any age

I can only guess thats because of the monel nickle string material is easier om the fingers

Plus you get the advantage of better tone and stronger projection from the heavier strings

Then i sold that and got a martin i really took a liking to

It came with medium martin monels

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

I liked the folky sound to them but missed that bright sound and easier playability of the elixir strings

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

I finally thought i had wore out those original monels enough to put elixirs on and it’s awful sounding comparatively

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

The monels have so much more bass and response
