I had been using what my local hardware store usually had always picking up 10 or 20 at a time because they get broken or lost in oil or stolen by the gnomes

They work but they dont have a lot of give to them and often break instead of bend

The point of using shims in the vise is to protect your vise pads so the stone digs into the shims but not into the pads
