This meguiar's hi-tech sanding backing pad is just a piece of high density foam. Right out of the box, it is curled and won't lay flat. This is advertised as a pack of 10.

I would vote these worth the investment, work really well for wet sanding and flex really well over contoured areas.
This new one is made from a different more flexible foam.
For the work i do (guitars) i like this way better than a stiff piece of wood.
