This is just my experience with this product and my opinion.
Even when trying to use them with the app many times the app reports they are unreachable.
Sadly the app does not work without an active internet connection.
In any event assigning static address is an easy and quick procedure and has completely resolved the issue with the smart switches.
Competitiveness
Only negative is they sometimes lose contact with smartthings routine and you have to manually shut them off from your phone.
I'm going over to wyze or amazon or some other name brand company for reliability and customer service.

You do have to set up device in the meross app but once set up you can easily import into your smart home setup
