Pros

Brilliant research and analysis written as engagingly as a top selling novel. Personalities emerge, forgotten centres of vitality come alive under the spotlight. Highly recommend both books.

Tom holland shows a consummate understanding of europe in the dark ages. His almost novelistic style makes for very easy reading. Not at all stuffy as many historians can be.
