Pros & Cons
Pros
Terry pratchett, one of the world's most beloved authors. Sargent knows best. And pratchett is master at seeing and rendering the truths we often forget if our socks get their way.
The nation of borogravia is always at war in one neighbor or another. Witty and brilliant as ever- so relevant to modern sexism and warfare over 15 years later.
All of these things conspire to make polly go to find her brother paul in the kneck valley. After signing up, she and the rest of the new recruits become the new "lads" of legendary soldier sergeant jackrum.
Cons
It's still ok, but it's defintly not going to be anywhere near the top of a list of his best books. This book is a downer. Go back and read the other novels. Save your money folks. Get the paperback.
This is pratchett's worst book, and i've read all of them. Instead of sharp or witty social commentary, partchett keeps putting layer upon layer of drama and *. There are some good bits -- pratchetto is incapable of writing a _whole_ bad book.
Monstrous regiment' is a monstrosity. There is no humour in the regiment.

Competitiveness
Compared to other discworld novels mr is downright gritty and realistic.

Its a little funny to me because ive always been a fan of pratchetts darker elements in his books yet i didnt actually like monstrous regiment when i first read it and it is dark

Its a little odd in that i think many discworld novels are very zoomy frantic magical races almost always covering wide areas and usually linking characters through humour as much as typical character arcs

My suspicion is when i first read this is i was distracted by the ongoing motif of the gender reveals and thought is was just a running joke that imo had outstayed its welcome

On a reread i think there is something much deeper going on

Yes some of the reveals are played for laughs at times but the actual underlying themes are as mentioned quite bleak and actually quite heartwrenching
