The butterflies do not have another layer of protection over it if you are wanting that but i like personally like how the butterflies stand out on top

They offer enough protection to keep your phone safe after nasty falls had an iphone 7 for 2 years that fell hard on multiple surfaces and the screen never cracked while not being bulky
