They are basically like drinking from a regular cup the slightest pressure or sucking motion release the flap to allow the water to flow threw

My son went straight from a bottle to a straw cup with no problems except for the fact that every straw cup we ever tried leaked from the straw or my son pulled the straw out completely and would dump the liquid all over

If they get dropped they will leak because the seal comes loose
