A couple of days after expanding it still had not gotten much past about 10 to 11 inches thick

Maybe the thickness measurement is in the center of the bed and not at the ribbed edge

One thing is for sure im never going to purchase another 1000 plus mattress from a local store and pay high delivery charges as well
