The pins are thick stainless and unlikely to fall out. You can adjust the pins to be a larger square if you're not getting enough tension to keep them from sliding.

The odor is of some kind of chemical. Now the crack is deeper and it has pushed the wood corners out of line. It is so hard to navigate amazon for these types of problems.
