Pros

Oliver twist was written longhand with paper and pen by candlelight. I really like the amazon feature that links together the audiobook and the kindle edition. This is another novel that i read on both audiobook and kindle.

Dickens’s characters are beautiful and memorable in their caricatured style. Dickens also has a knack for wry, ironical humor. Dickens goes hard on the institution of poverty and how the “assistance” given to those fallen on hard times is a farce.

Oliver twist is the story of an orphan, born illegitimately. This novel focuses on the mistreatment and exploitation of children and child labor. The story was serialized monthly in bentley’s miscellany from 1836 to 1837.

Cons

Two hundred years earlier, shakespeare treats his villian * so much better and at least gives him a defence. The character of oliver is thoroughly unlikeable.

Quality

We still had a good discussion and i look forward to discussing dickens again in the future with the back to the classics book club.

As with all of dickens' works, oliver twist was beautifully written and filled with the twists and turns one expects from dickens' books.
