Pros & Cons

Pros

Great for location scouting, although on set cellphone cameras are now king. It also speeds us up for a few more shots every day. Is simple to use, very useful for different tv and film format.

Arrived well packaged. Relatively quick shipping. Shipment is prompt. Works exactly as advertised.

The most impressive aspect of the opteka micro viewfinder are the (3) it has for tv, 35mm, and 16mm. It's good and clear up to about the 50mm setting, after which the image gets quite small. Keep careful track of your lens cap.

Cons

This is so disappointing and frustrating, as the numbers aren't accurate at all. What you get on anamorphic is actually closer to 35mm, and what you get for 35mm is definitely not 35mm. No lower than 35. Lense is useless.

Quality

This viewer seems well made and generally suits my needs (i wish it went wider).

Really speeds up location scouting and works like a champ when going through pre-production to get quick ideas of how shots should look.

Throw down some notes on lens and aspect ratio from your scout and you should have a good idea of what to expect on the day of the shoot.

Some of the reviews talk about setting at wider and farther angles, the image is truly very small.

Price

So for the price, this is a very good director's viewfinder.

The affordability, size and functionality of this little unit is perfect.

Usually these run really expensive, so i was nervous with it only being $100.

For the price, however, this is a pretty good one.

Packaging/appearance

It comes with a lanyard and carrying pouch.

Competitiveness

I really like the focal length comparisons corresponding to the format you're shooting on.

My only complaint is the cloth bag it came in was shedding all of its coating making a big mess before i got it to the trash can

Related to other reviews that complain that the viewer is not accurate for a 35mm camera remember this viewfinder is calibrated for filmmakers and 35mm movie film uses a smaller frame 16mm x 22mm compared to a fullframe camera 24mm x 35mm

So the widest 18mm lens view on the 35mm scale is about equal to a 30mm lens on a fullframe still camera
