Pros & Cons
Pros
Owc are a solid reliable company that makes great hardware. Tech-support at owc was very responsive (and a us-based company) set up was a breeze and took about 30 minutes.
Drive trays fit seamlessly. Thunderbolt chassis is the way to go. I also have an older usb-c drive daisy chained to the thunderbay and it works fine.
Raid is faster than my macbook pro's internal sdd hard-drive can transfer. I can scroll through 60,000 photos in several folders at once. Raids are cheaper than nas datum arrays.
Cons
Owc tech support claims that they don't know why and blames it on apple. Using the beta version has known data integrity issues. It is not very useful and even dangerous if the information is going be lost after a week.
The noise is so loud when 'active' or'synching' that it drives me to distraction. Now i'm stuck with an unusable raid. They market a plastic and foam device to correct this issue, but you have to pay for it!
Highlights
Quality
First of all it’s well built and a solid construction and fairly weighty without any drives in it!
Awesome product, safe reliable backup, extremely fast, cooling fan is quiet, built heavy duty.
After 2 weeks the power light on the first unit failed to illuminate (infant mortality).
Drive access and fan noise are barely audible, never heard drives spin up.
Price
This is a really good value enclosure.
Worth the money for convenience and piece of mind.
I tried to cheap out on this and used a drive chassis that was half the price, but ran into so many problems with it.
Be sure to buy the softraid software at the time of purchase to save some money.
Shipping
Tech support was prompt and very helpful.
Arrived early and is working like a champ.
It is early days yet -- a few weeks after i received it but so far i like like it.
Competitiveness
I also purchased my own drives (4x 10tb seagate ironwolf) instead of the toshiba drives that are preconfigured on some thunderbay products.
After some research i decided to purchase this thunderbolt 3 enclosure instead of a nas solution (considered a synology).
See below as to which version of softraid you should use.
From what i gather there is softraid lite ($49, no raid 5), softraid ($179, full features) and softraid xt (included with thund... Read More

The first decision you have to make is if you want access to only 34 of the usable total harddrive space raid5 or the whole total capacity raid0 because everything you do after that decision is kindof unrecoverable
