Pros & Cons
Pros
If you don't need raid 5, there are other 1 or 2-slot nvme enclosures that will allow you to run your nvme drives even faster. I found softraid lite a breeze to use and it is performing impeccably. The fan is a bit noisy, but four 500gb samsung m2's i... Read More
The above screenshots are a performance comparison between the owc enclosure and the nvme ssd installed on the 2017 27in 5k imac. Both have thunderbolt 3 connections. Connect the thunderbolt cord to my lenovo thinkpad t480 (has thunderbolt 3) running ... Read More
Overall, very satisfied with the performance. It is not pretty, but it is resolved both issues. It has a great build quality and looks awesome.
The buyer wants it easy to use. One of the best ways to build in simplicity is to remove all features that are not absolutely necessary. Installation is easy, setup is fast, and the results are immediate.
This is almost certainly one of your main bottlenecks. It loads hefty patches for the vis in my music software in seconds. This translates to about 800mbps in crystaldiskmark, with 2 and 3 scaling linearly.
Cons
It seems it was cross threaded when put together. The thunderbolt connector on the unit is defective by design. I guess it's safe to assume they cheaped-out on the controller as well.
Highlights
Quality
The unit works great and is quiet ( very necessary for a studio environment) would recommend it.
It’s raid performance is consistent with full thunderbolt 3 connectivity with no drops in sustained reads or writes.

Price
With falling ssd prices, filling this with 4x2tb wd blue nvme ssds was a very good value (roughly $700).
The options are shocking limited unless you are looking at $500+, which i was not.
There is another 4 bay nvme enclosure on amazon but it is $999.
But, with the 1tb nvme4 rockets at $200 a pop, it cost me $1,100 to get it.
Shipping
- amazon delivered over night - free with prime member, very happy purchase.
There is absolutely no reason to ship this with the more complex full raid.
Packaging/appearance
As the package i bough didnt come with s/w, i use mac s/w to build 16tb volume.
I have the box at the back of my desk, behind my monitor, with the fan pointing down.
Competitiveness
This is an expensive piece of kit, but compared to others on the market, this has the best build quality.
With the 4m2, i have 4tb of raid 0 configured ssds, giving me speeds comparable to my macbook pro's internal ssd across a thund... Read More
Similarities with thunderbay mini:- both cost the same ($250 without any bundled software).
Nvme prices have come way down and are about the same as ssd prices, so if you're looking for speed, it's a no-brainer to go wi... Read More
