I ordered the thunderbay w/out drives, with the softraid option, which is $80 more than the standard thunderbay.

Shipping
In the end, and after some doing, i successfully got it to work, and just as fast as my ssd drives.
Transfer speeds (both read/write) are very, very fast, and this thing has been rock solid.
It's very fast and, so far (6 months now), completely reliable.
Packaging/appearance
However, software packaging on my order was messed up.
Competitiveness
I put this up against a drobo 5d and this unit proved to be the best for my needs.
I've had my thunderbay 4 for about 15 months now and it has performed like a champ.
I should have bought this over a qnap nas in the first place.
I'm running in raid 1+0 with 2tb toshiba drives, and have never had a hitch.

The package came with a note that said my thunderbay was bundled with a whole bunch of free software but there were no disc drives on my order upon which my valuable freeware might be loaded thats the way owc used to ship its mercury rack pro and there were no cds bundled either
