Pros & Cons
Pros
This thing is a beast. All metal construction. Cons:pretty hard to find but:1. Tech-support at owc was very responsive (and a us-based company), which is worth every penny spent in my opinion. Owc are a solid reliable company that makes great hardware... Read More
It is fast enough for me to edit video off of, which is great. Once i read-up on how raids work, i think i finally understand how data can come through a thunderbolt-cable faster than my macbook pro's internal sdd hard-drive can transfer.
Build quality is great, you can hot-swap drives. Had some problems getting softraid installed, but once i got that sorted, the rest of the setup was easy.
Cons
Using the beta version has known data integrity issues. There is a bug that crashes the m1. The tb ports, for the thunderbolt cables, are far too wobbly causing many disconnects if the cable is touched.
It is so obnoxiously loud when 'active' or'synching' that it drives me to distraction. They market a plastic and foam device to correct this issue, but you have to pay for it!
Highlights
Quality
Pros:• 100% reliable, no disconnects• solid metal construction.
Reliably well-built and simple to usemy old thunderbay was 10 years old and finally beginning to suffer disconnects.
Drive access and fan noise are barely audible, never heard drives spin up.
Attempting to reboot failed, drive not visible.
Price
Yeah, it costs a lot more than the 2-drive usb dock, but the reliability is worth it.
Competitiveness
I also purchased my own drives (4x 10tb seagate ironwolf) instead of the toshiba drives that are preconfigured on some thunderbay products.
After some research i decided to purchase this thunderbolt 3 enclosure instead of a nas solution (considered a synology).
In contrast, i'd have preferred 6 feet for more flexible placement.
See below as to which version of softraid you should use.
