The new lumix has a sweet 12x, 25-300mm equivalent leica-branded zoom lens. I'm an old school, 35mm guy, who used to shoot with a leica m3 & m5. Optics are very impressive and can hold their own against my canon g-12.
I love the macro, three presets are nice, the feature allowing me to reduce the file size and gain more optical zoom power is awesome. Only disadvantage is that it lacks manual focus and the aperture range is somewhat limited.

Cons
Camera takes decent pictures, but not great. About 1 out of 10 pics come out exceedingly blue tinted. Iauto mode is essentially useless. Hi-sensitivity mode ( iso6400) is pretty much useless.
The zoom lever is way too touchy to access the slow speed. It just continually has this weird black dot show up. Am not sure why it's malfunctioning so soon after we bought it.
Having two menus just confuses the issue. Nothing stands out (positively or negatively) compared with other $200-300 p&s cameras. The quick menu is incomplete.

I have used this camera during a trip to london and i really enjoyed taking pictures of landscape images with the wide angle lens.
Excellent quality and functions, impressive digital zoom.

If you find a good tz4 for a good price don't pass it by.
Packaging/appearance
You can see the pollen on the stamens and the dewdrops were crystal clear.
Competitiveness
I use it in my school classroom, and it will join my canon rebel t2i this summer on vacation.
I use it for car events a lot and videoing drag racing events and it works great!
This one has lots of features, including utilizing jpeg format for older computers, instead of sdxc format for windows 7 and above.

Usually the first sign of damage when you drop a camera is when the the zoom lens wont move in or out when you turn the camera on or off
