Depending on the age of the wiring i am working with it can be very difficult and even unsafe to try to jam too much in a box whether it is an existing box or a new one being added where an old work box is being used

But i hardly ever use standard cubic inch boxes and definitely not el cheapo outlets and switches

You have to make a pretty precise hole oin the wall to make these as secure as possible

But your outlet and faceplate are then going to protrude inside the wall and inch or so

Due to the location of the cabinets i had to build myself and the folding tabletop being mounted over the washer and dryer my wife was uncertain where she wanted the outlet until after the install was complete

I simply ran a 122 behind the wall to where i figured it would be and then cut the hole using the measurements provided on the box

I’ve fought with the elcheapo blue old construction boxes before and i despise those junkers
