The inside is like a large piece of pvc, covered by a sturdy rubber foam. The knobby portion is only slightly softer than the gray roller.

Cons

The foam is just too soft and the nubs are too small. I weight 168 lbs and it started cracking shortly after two months of daily, not that heavy use.
