Basically you are adding two more pieces of glass with the outer ring that rotates thus allowing for a darkening to appear on your filter

On a 24mm prime the image is only slightly softer than the image without using the filter

I also have the 77mm fader nd mark ii which is i got for 129 and that model does show an increase in sharpness but both are not near as accurate in sharpness as used without the vnd filter
