Tip the attachment for the boom is loaded sideways in order to fit in the travel case but you do not want to mount the boom that way as the ball grip will slip at that angle
The boom attaches at one end which means you definitely need counterbalancing if you attach anything heavy or extend it out all the way but there is no convenient attachment point for sandbags if you do need them
