Cons
There's no blocking diode built in so the car battery dumps current into the 9v battery killing it. It only puts out 9 volts not 12 required to keep the ecm operating. Don't buy it.

Replaced the battery took about an hour and my radio settings were just fine.
I used this device when i changed the battery in a 06 mustang and i do not think i lost any codes
The reason you can't is that the car battery will "over-charge" the 9 volt battery and possibly risk an exploding battery!
Price
So this was a very good, inexpensive, investment and i strongly recommend it (at least for older cars).
I didn’t want to spend money on a reserve 12 volt battery or an expensive charger.
I also didn’t want to pay for the more expensive code reader plug as you need a battery for that thing.

As another reviewer has indicated you must have a hot lighter socket or turn the ignition keyto accessory

I disconnected the battery for a few minutes on my 2006 corolla to clean a terminal
