This is a relatively easy to use sharpener when trying out for the first time use a bad or old knife to get your bearings and feel for the way the machine handles the blades your sharpening as for the spring mounted guides i don’t care for thembut with practice you get to learn the machineone thing that should have been seen and changed in the design is the electrical cord comes out the middle back of the machine where you are sharpening and running sharpened blades up and back the cord does not lay flat so be careful not to cut into the cord when sharpening the cord ideally should have been designed to come out at either end
