Pros & Cons
Pros
The final twist is actually pretty good, and i liked it but unfortunately it lacked the impact it could have if the setup was better. Here those friends are engaged in a multi-layered adventure. Despite some uneven pacing, still worth the money.
The book focuses on his journey, aided by harry king and moist von lipwig, to bring the newfangled railroad all across the sto plains and beyond. It is through this story that the author pokes his sharp wit at the story industrial revolution brought a... Read More
Cons
This book has no suspense. Vetinari is unsubtle! Death is vindictive! It is, in a word, bad. I'm flabbergasted that there are so many positive reviews.
The seemless joining if various storylines into one overarching piece is lost. It's as if he tried to throw every supporting character in anhk-morpork in as a sort of last hurah, but gave none of tgem a lasting sendoff. The plot at times feels like it... Read More
If this author wrote jingo, vimes would have valiantly led a tiny band of watch to * the entire klatchian army. It is like reading an ayn rand novel. It's not like had tons of reference material.
It turns the characters from sympathetic and flawed people who struggle to do the right thing into invulnerable and robotic ciphers. Every ounce of the subtlety, wit and character has been bleached out and replaced by over the top ranting and clunky d... Read More
Is the end of the discworld adventure for me. This just plain is not a discworld novel as we have been getting them. The book just plods on, giving me no reason to finish.
Highlights
Quality
Nice setup, good text size and a strong spine.
A excellent final submission in the discworld series.

Yes the radical dwarves don't like the new railway, and target it and moist a couple of times.
Price
Not happy after paying full price for it.
) by paying a living wage and other social benefits.
Competitiveness
This time there are railroads, no one is in charge, and somehow moisthas to work it out.

I think its a reference to actual events but similar to unseen academicals referencing soccer it sometimes doesn't land.

This is going to be a really strange review possibly showing signs of my impending end of my discworld reread through or in this case first time reading and my brain frazzling on nostalgia bitter sweetness

Most people are probably aware but raising steam was the last discworld to be published while pratchett was alive sheppards crown being posthumous

Similar to snuff id heard quite a bit about the book before reading including in pratchetts biography while overall being well received there was a fair bit of critique which i will address later on and it must have been quite difficult in some respects as at the time of publication pratchett had been living with alzheimers for a while and continuing to publish very high quality books

So just to make sense of the some of the troubles of this book in no particular order and more just to make note of them for my own processing to be honestthe ploti have to admit from some of the comments id read about this book i was expecting the story to be some sort of shambles

Its not nearly that bad however the overarching story does lack a strong central thread perhaps ironically being about the emergence of a railway system i would say a good 23 of the story are misc moist adventures in and around the steam train and railway a series of events and moments that are connected by being part of the story but dont really interact that well the problem being that the main threat in this story is a dwarven coup leading to extremist attacks but largely on the clacks towers

This creates a sort of parallel but not really connected pair of stories
