Pros & Cons
Pros
A proper espresso is all about temp & timing (also the proper grind) the pid allows you to pinpoint the exact temp the machine is at within 1 degree. The pid smarly removes the temperature and time variables from pulling delicious shots.
This pid is from auber instruments and comes in a kit from ai for $149 (temp control only), $177 (steam control added), and $199 with steam control and pre infusion. Fun hobby to tune it in. Makes excellent espresso.
Since it's single boiler it's a bit cumbersome making milk drinks, but any single boiler is like that. The practice is worth it because it makes the best tasting cappuccino i've ever had.
Easy peasy. Follow the sticker directions exactly to prep the machine and there will be no issue. Diy with help from the youtube video or ship it and pay $100 for installation.
Highlights
Quality
The machine looks great, is compact (which is my number 1 reason not to get a double boiler) and i am very happy with the purchase.
) pair it with the rancilio rocky grinder and solid stainless steel 58mm tamper and you'll be all set.
And the fact that the portafilter handle doesn't stick out straight but at an angle, is also pretty ugly.
For frame of reference, my preference is for a shot that tastes like high quality, old-school, dark chocolate--not the tangy st... Read More
Price
If you are buying separately, i advise the lowest price is from the manufacturer and they provide great instructions plus color photos too.
Shipping
I don't want to have to send it back, pay for shipping, and wait weeks so.
If the kit is added later you would still have to add a small shipping charge.
Packaging/appearance
The machine arrived in perfect shape with well sealed packaging.
Competitiveness
I already owned a rancilio grinder and this is my second semi-automatic espresso machine.
It's definitely a step up from a typical plasticky home appliance and i hope it lasts for years.
You can buy a rancilio silvia on amazon with a controller already installed for 400 dollars more or you can save 200 by doing it yourself.
I have been using a rancilio espresso machine (commercial) for over 20 years and unfortunately, it recent died with a power su... Read More

While i have yet to install a pid which sounds theoretically like a really good idea i get very good repeatable results by weighing out the same amount of coffee each time on a relatively inexpensive scale that yields very repeatable results httpssmile

I actually called rancilio because it looks like none of the pictures that anybody shows of the machine
