Needs some sort of locking mechanism. Where the collapsible metal legs attach to the the cot bed top is plastic. Bunches up like an according.

It would have been easy to fit in two or three velcro straps so that it would stay open

I have used three 8 inch plastic cable ties with 45 lbs maximum load to hold it open see the attached picture
