Store it with the spigot in and the lid on the top.
I was impressed with the latter when i was trying to figure it out when they first arrived.

Ive had to replace the lidspigot once because i tossed it in the garage for a while with the spigot pointing out and the spigot got damaged

The spigot quickly gets so dirty i wouldnt store it inside with drinking water

I took the advice others and installed an oring around the threaded plug that i installed
