Pros & Cons
Pros
Am aircraft reception is a little scratchy but it does receive. The mic/speaker connection is kenwood compatible and i've used it with several headsets that follow that standard. If you listen to these channels you'll need to disable the squelch.
The radio fits comfortably in the hand and is sturdy. The packaging is nice and the radio feels good. Very pleased with seller and product.
The only things i don't care for in this radio is its funky body design and super high-pitched speaker. One thing i really like is that both bands don't need to be in the 2 meter or 70 cm band! In general it's a solidly built radio and i like the larg... Read More
Cons
This barely hits my local repeater. Honestly, the uv-5r is a better radio for way less. Air band is the same way. No es facil el manejo.
Highlights
Quality
The radio is well built and is pretty easy to use and program.
Good features, lots of options in settings and good 5-watt power.
This one’s firmware is not recognized by chirp.
If the squelch is manually opened, the signals are clear so this is not a fundamental receiver issue.
Price
This was a great deal for the price.
This radio is a ton of fun for less than $20 -- amazing price!
I bought this on amazon on sale for $20.
This is a little amazing considering the very low price.
Shipping
I sent an e-mail to retevis and had not heard back.
The next one came in one day and i assembled all the parts.
Packaging/appearance
The packaging is nice and the radio fits comfortably in the hand (or on the belt.
You will need to order the cable separately as my package did not include one.
Competitiveness
Good small ham radio that i find easier to use and navigate than its popular competitor.
Since i don't have a lot of experience with different radios, i'll compare the ra79 to the baofeng uv-5r which i also own.
The retevis ra79 is a rebranded quansheng kg-uv5 and except for the branding, they are identical radios, with the retevis being... Read More
Both a signalstick and nagoya 771 are much better for distant stations.
