I too had difficulty with a purchased punch down tool as others had mentioned damaging a couple of keystones

Each wire slot in the keystone has two opposing electrical contacts that are tapered and installed at a 45° angle in relation to the slot

Insuring some excess wire in each slot i stripped the insulation at the point of contact in each assigned slot

Starting the cap by hand i placed the jaws of the vise grip over each side and gently worked the caps down until they locked in place
