Pros & Cons

Pros

It gives a completely new narrative to the captive/captor stories we have been told before. I also love that it doesn't just end with a happily ever after, it shows what happens after the curtain falls and that all too often, it isn't always pretty.

As jack grows to become more curious, her wanting for escaping back to reality outside this room grows rapidly. Ma devises a clever plan to help him to escape and save them both.

Ma is an extraordinary woman who against every single odd overcame life, for her child. She is held captive and feels up having a son. Ma was taken at the age of 19 and has been living in this small room for seven year.

Cons

After 50 pages, it seems like nails on a chalkboard. I wish the pages and pages of their day-to-day lives had been trimmed because these details seem to be repeated over and over.

I mean, the two go through such a godawful trauma, and then she basically doesn’t want anybody to help her son acclimate at all. The mother’s narration almost sounds “canned.

The book's first half falls flat. Everything he thought he knew is a lie, and his whole world changes in the blink of an eye. The language of the book toggles between an american and european feel and just comes out confusing.

And although the premise for the book is grim (young mother and son held captive for years in a small shed), it was a fast, abs...  Read More
