I think that is in part because we are being introduced to the main character at a very dark time in her life and consequently ​she is not the most reliable narrator

Now mike hammer is a damaged woman struggling with a horrendous failure in her past which included losing her pi license losing her family being declared dead halfway through her carp time and discovering that shooting her traitorous lover was not “easy” but that she really really should have shot him anyway
